Arizona Next: Tesla Ramps Up Robotaxi Service Expansion

tesla ramps up robotaxi service expansion

Seeking to launch its fledgling robotaxi service in the Metro Phoenix area, Tesla has applied to test and run autonomous vehicles in Arizona, as verified by the state’s Department of Transportation.

According to a statement a representative sent via email, Tesla contacted the Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) of the Arizona Department of Transportation on June 26 to start the certification process. As reported by the department, the firm, which launched a limited robotaxi service in South Austin last month, is eyeing to grow its presence in the Phoenix Metro region.

Tesla’s application covers both testing and operation of self-driven vehicles with a driver present as well as testing and running without a driver. As stated by the DOT MVD representative, a judgment on this application is expected by the end. Earlier on Thursday, Tesla influencer Sawyer Merritt first revealed the first contact between Tesla and the DOT of state.

As it has been reported, Casey Blaine, the company’s senior regulatory counsel, who had already attended a virtual meeting with the DOT of the state and Arizona’s Commerce Authority, created Tesla’s outreach. The emails indicate that these conversations are still at an early stage, with Blaine asking a DOT official to help with introductions to officials in Maricopa County government and law enforcement before any conceivable launch. Blaine has not yet answered a request for comment.

Tesla launched a limited robotaxi service in South Austin in June, which is presently only available to certain guests invited by the firm. On Thursday, though, CEO Elon Musk revealed on X, his social media site, that Tesla intends to expand the robotaxi service more widely throughout the city shortly. He further added that Tesla is awaiting permission to deploy robotaxis in the Bay Area, which he expects will take place in a month or two.
