Porsche unveiled a fresh version of the 911 on Sunday at the IAA Mobility exhibition in Munich, Germany. Not counting a few limited-run models, this model is the quickest to achieve 60 and the most powerful 911 ever made, MPH from a full stop, this achievement in just 2.4 seconds. One of the most cutting-edge hybrid powertrains now available is said to be responsible for this amazing performance.
Porsche has designed a totally new 3.6 L flat-six engine instead of just connecting an electric motor to an existing 911. This renovation let them do away with the belt drive and rearrange certain auxiliary components, which are now powered by the car’s 400 V traction battery. Originally unveiled in the 911 GTS T-Hybrid, which Ars recently reviewed, the system was Porsche added for this model one electric turbocharger that operates akin to the MGU-H seen in Formula 1 vehicles.
Almost instantly, it can spin up to 120,000 rpm, eliminating throttle lag and also grabbing spare energy from the revolving turbine to recharge the 1.9 kWh battery pack. Two of these electric turbochargers will be found in the 2026 911 Turbo S coming up. Like the GTS or Porsche 911 Club Coupe, the 911 Turbo S will have a 53-horsepower (40 kW), 110 lb-ft (150 Nm) permanent synchronous motor incorporated into an eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox. With 701 hp (523 kW) and 590 lb-ft (800 Nm), the overall output allows it to reach a 0–60 mph (0–98 km/h) time of just 2.4 seconds. Driving a hybrid 911 Turbo S, Jorg Bergmeister finished a lap of the ring in 7 minutes, 3.92 seconds during testing last autumn, 14 seconds faster than its predecessor.
