The Innova Hycross Takes the Hybrid Crown from the Prius Twins

hycross beats prius

Thinking of the word ‘hybrid,’ the Toyota Prius is probably the first vehicle that springs to mind. Although it might not be the first gasoline-electric vehicle to hit U.S. consumers, it has the distinction of being the first of its kind globally. One might think, considering this well-known reputation, that it lies among the best-selling hybrid alternatives for the brand in the American market. Looking at the total sales of the standard hybrid and PHEV Prime versions of the current-generation model, one can clearly see that in the modern automobile environment, it performs well.

But there is a specific midsize sedan that greatly exceeds this smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicle. Toyota is the undisputed leader in the field of hybrid gasoline-electric technology. Honda certainly fights aggressively with its lineup, which includes the CR-V, Accord, and Civic, yet these products hardly make a major difference versus Toyota’s broad inventory, which includes more than 15 vehicles.

Though the Toyota Camry, available just as a hybrid, shows that there is still considerable need for this sector, one may also suppose that Toyota’s extensive line of SUVs and crossovers would be the preferred options. Since its introduction, it has regularly topped the sales charts for the Prius HEV products from the Japanese brand by significant margins, confirming that the midsize sedan class is far from dead despite an influx of attractive crossover and SUV choices. This tendency has continued throughout the first half of 2025.

Toyota said it had successfully sold an astounding 181,337 hybrids-only Camry models over the first seven months of 2025, placing it as the second most popular vehicle under its brand, behind only the gas-only RAV4, which had sales of more than 250,000 units. Toyota has verified 26,048 individual unit sales as of July 2025, therefore representing a 4.2% rise in sales over the same period last year. This model’s year-to-date performance is an amazing 142.8%.
