With the start of manufacturing of the new MG4 electric hatchback, MG is making history as the first mass-market electric vehicle worldwide to feature a semi-solid-state battery. It is a major advancement that promises to change the affordable electric vehicle industry. Chen Cui, the General Manager of MG Brand Division, stated during a press conference held on July 17 that the official debut of the car is set for August 5. But the pricing, rather than the technology, is what really grabs one’s attention.
Only 5% of QingTao Energy’s semi-solid-state EV battery’s liquid electrolyte marks a significant step toward meeting the long-awaited aim of real solid-state technology. Importantly, MG claims that the 70 kWh battery pack offers a CLTC-rated range of 537 kilometres (about 333 miles) and performs better in cold conditions than traditional lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) batteries. At –7°C, range retention is said to be 13.8% better, a characteristic that could appeal to residents in colder areas.

Also very important are safety elements. MG asserts that the new semi-solid-state EV battery passed a demanding 360-degree puncture test, a result that greatly builds consumer trust in cutting-edge battery technology. Rated at 180 Wh/kg, the energy density of this semi-solid-state EV battery is considerably above many LFP batteries in a similar class.
The pricing is most amazing, though. Chen Cui confirmed that the MG4 will be available at a price range of 80,000 to 120,000 Yuan, which is approximately $11,000 to $16,400 USD. With its greater range, rear-wheel drive, and a more potent motor, MG is optimistic that customers will see a major improvement, therefore positioning it directly against the BYD Dolphin, the best-selling small electric vehicle in China.
Unlike the front-wheel-drive Dolphin, the MG4 runs a 120 kW rear-mounted motor that drives the rear wheels, a configuration that usually improves handling abilities. Moreover, at 4,395 mm long and a 2,750 mm wheelbase, the MG4 is somewhat bigger than many of its rivals.
